The US Food and Drug Administration has approved a limited claim by yogurts that they may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. This is the first qualified health claim the FDA has made for yogurt. Qualified health claims are supported by scientific evidence but do not meet the requirements for an authorized health claim. The claim states that eating yogurt regularly, at least 2 cups (3 servings) per week, may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. The serving size recommendation is based on high-quality studies and is considered the minimum necessary to achieve the claimed effect. Yogurt is rich in calcium, protein, B vitamins, and minerals.
