Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, has been found to be more effective than non-surgical methods in managing type 2 diabetes long-term. A recent study compared the blood sugar levels and medication regimens of individuals who underwent weight loss surgery versus those who received non-surgical medical management. The participants who had weight loss surgery had lower blood sugar levels, required fewer diabetes medications, and were more likely to achieve diabetes remission. The study supports the use of weight loss surgery for individuals with a BMI less than 35 who struggle to control their blood sugar. Despite its benefits, weight loss surgery comes with risks and potential complications. However, maintaining a healthy diet and taking vitamins regularly can help mitigate these issues.
