When a new version of ChatGPT was released, some users noticed that one of the virtual assistant voices sounded like Scarlett Johansson. However, Johansson clarified that she did not provide the voice for OpenAI’s product and demanded that the company stop using the sound-alike. This incident has contributed to the erosion of trust in OpenAI, as it has faced criticism from creative industries and former employees. Johansson expressed shock, anger, and disbelief at the situation and revealed that she had been approached by Sam Altman to voice the system but they couldn’t connect before the product announcement. OpenAI has since paused the use of the voice in question and apologized to Johansson. The actress linked her dispute to concerns about deepfakes and the protection of one’s likeness and identity.
