Five Cases of Bird Flu Reported in Colorado

Five cases of bird flu have been identified among workers culling poultry at a farm in northeast Colorado. The H5N1 outbreaks have also affected wild birds and dairy cows in several states. Three of the cases were announced on Friday and have now been confirmed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Another case has also been confirmed, while a fifth case is presumed positive based on state testing. The workers experienced mild symptoms such as conjunctivitis and respiratory problems but were not hospitalized. The investigation is ongoing with support from the CDC. The risk to the general public remains low according to the CDC. Four individuals in the US had previously tested positive, all of whom were workers at dairy operations. Poultry products are still safe to eat if handled and cooked properly.
