Kenya is currently experiencing nationwide protests against proposed tax hikes. The protests, known as ‘7 Days of Rage,’ are a response to the Finance Bill 2024. President William Ruto has expressed his desire to engage in dialogue with the protesters, although security forces have been accused of abducting individuals, including bloggers, content creators, human rights defenders, a doctor, and a parliamentary staffer. Amnesty International Kenya is investigating these alleged abductions. These demonstrations coincide with the recent designation of Kenya as a ‘major non-NATO ally’ by US President Joe Biden. This marks the first time a sub-Saharan African country has received such a status.
