California Governor Gavin Newsom plans to redirect funds from cities and counties that fail to show progress in reducing homelessness. Newsom’s announcement followed the recent clearing of a homeless encampment in Los Angeles. In July, Newsom issued an executive order urging state agencies to dismantle homeless encampments on state property and encouraging local governments to adopt similar measures. The governor criticized certain jurisdictions for not doing enough despite the resources provided by the state. California has the nation’s largest homeless population, with more than 180,000 individuals experiencing homelessness in the state.
