Hundreds of thousands of doctors in India have gone on strike to demand better protection for health workers following the rape and murder of a trainee medic in West Bengal. The body of the resident doctor was found with multiple injuries and signs of sexual assault. Medical federations in several states have urged doctors to stop providing elective services indefinitely and have called for the case to be fast-tracked through the courts. The doctors also highlighted incidents of violence towards health workers and threats of abuse by patients or their families. India has been struggling to address high rates of violence against women, with many cases going unreported due to shame and stigma.
