Databricks acquires data-optimization startup Tabular in fresh challenge to Snowflake

Databricks, a data analytics software maker, announced its acquisition of Tabular, a startup specializing in optimizing cloud-stored data. The deal aims to help Databricks compete with Snowflake and other rivals, enabling faster product development. While the exact price remains undisclosed, reports suggest Databricks will pay between $1 billion and $2 billion for the acquisition. Databricks has been actively expanding with recent acquisitions, including Arcion and MosaicML. Tabular’s expertise in enhancing the open-source format Apache Iceberg will benefit Databricks in providing cost-effective queries and business-friendly features.
